Independent Bikini lines are hard to come by, at least here on the Eastern Seaboard and I reckon anywhere without wonderful swimming holes and dialed weather. No this isn't your average dragon fighting a wizard off in a cool Lord Of The Rings battle sequence of every dork of Gondor's wet dreams. But here is a Bikini line out of Austin that says fuck it, we'll do what we want, make it look good and unique and still has enough fashion sense to kick your testicles into your stomach for those of you still hiding behind your cut off "jorts" or some swim top your mom got you for summer camp. Here I ask Melissa Gee ten questions in regards to here killer art and custom bikini design in the great land known as Austin Texas.
Lets ask mastermind of all things swimwear Melissa Gee some questions regarding her work.
1. Hows it going Melissa? First what is your age and primary employer when it comes to custom swimwear?
Melissa: 1. I'm 24 and i sew and design swimwear for McQueeney Bikini Company.
2. Ever make that one perfect bikini you just didn't want to part with?
Melissa: The great thing about making a perfect bikini for myself and then it getting lost or wore to much or whatever is that i can always make something more awesome than the last. new ideas are always emerging and my style changes quite often. i pretty much make myself a new "perfect" bikini every week, gotta wear the product right?
3. Is it rad seeing someone at lets say, Barton Springs rocking your own design?
Melissa: Its really rad seeing our product out there getting some play time! i was at the secret beach with some friends last weekend, i walked past a group of people and i heard a girl say "oww, thats a McQueeney Bikini!" she seemed super stoked to recognize the company and of course i was stoked too.thats probably the first time ever ive been called out haha it feelt good
4. What's the best bikini show off spot in Austin?
Melissa: its really rad seeing our product out there getting some play time! i was at the secret beach with some friends last weekend, i walked past a group of people and i heard a girl say "oww, thats a McQueeney Bikini!" she seemed super stoked to recognize the company and of course i was stoked too.thats probably the first time ever ive been called out haha it feelt good
5. Favorite place to swim in Texas?
Melissa: My fav place to swim in texas this summer might have to be the comal river in new braunfels. last summer it was the entire greenbelt of austin, but sadly theres no water running through it this summer :(
6. Best bar after 9pm in Austin?
Melissa: I've become a fan of the eastside bars, living on the eastside its easy have some drinks and ride right down the street home. i spend time at the yellow jacket on e.5th some nights but most times i just go wherever my friends are, im not to picky.
7. Chuy's or Wahoo's?
Melissa: I choose wahoos! the bartenders are rad and they have summer temperature happy hour!1 hour of pounding 1$ or less margaritas, depending on the high temperature of the day.it rules.
8. Hit up any sets down 9th St. Trails on the bicycle?
Melissa: I rode down to 9th with my friend keith when he first got back into town. he peddled around for awhile, got tired &sweaty and handed his bike to me. i dont ride bmx but had a fuckin blast going over the lil woopty woos and carving the sides of some dirt mounds haha. my dad rode bmx when i was a kid &built a HUGE track in our back yard, i remember being probably 5 or 6 shredding it with him.i had a lot less fear back then.
9. Favorite tattoo you have inked on your flesh?
Melissa: Damn, i really love them all but my fav might have to be my stick and poked 23 jersey on the front of my ankle. after drinking whiskey all day on my 23rd birthday i ended up with a nice jordan jersey courtesy of my friend travis.ive promised to never get it touched up haha
10. Where can all the lovely ladies and dudes who like everything in a tight package go to pick up your amazing bikini work or maybe give us readers some insight on future projects?
Melissa: All of our designs and photos are on our facebook page or website. if you live in austin/san antonio area we have a shop you can come out to and if not we can still get you custom fit with a few measurements and questions.weve just branched off a new line called east side bikinis, with more influence of my style incorporated; bold, unique color combinations, vintage inspired designs and overall more modern or trendy swimwear. basically theres nothing we dont or cant make, we cover all bases from maternity tankinis to itsy bitsy bikini contest bikinis and that is why we are a custom shop.
